One of the most beautiful places to practice canyoning

The Sierra de Guara is located in northern Spain, in the province of Huesca. It is the gateway to the Aragonese Pyrenees, the pre-Pyrenean area situated below the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park.

The Sierra de Guara is known for its stunning landscapes and deep canyons. With its Mediterranean and dry climate throughout the year, it makes it an ideal place for canyoning. Some even say it is the mecca of canyoning in Europe! Whether it is the mecca or not, tastes vary, but undoubtedly, one cannot deny the charm and unique beauty of its canyons and crystal-clear waters.

The Sierra de Guara offers a wide variety of canyons with different difficulty levels, allowing adventurers of all skill levels to enjoy this experience.

It all dates back to the 1960s when French neighbors were the first to explore the canyons of this mountain range. It was in the 1980s when the popularity of canyoning as an organized sport began to grow in the Sierra de Guara.

Currently, thanks to the evolution that canyoning in the Sierra de Guara has undergone, it is the flagship sport of this Natural Park. Its Mediterranean climate and the low probability of rain make this uniquely charming place offer us a great variety of opportunities to practice canyoning through its gorges, canyons, and crystal-clear waters.

Another different but very interesting option offered by the Natural Park of the Sierra de Guara. Although it is true that there are few occasions when the weather forecast does not allow us to carry out water descents, sometimes, for safety reasons and to avoid bigger scares, the option of going into a dry canyon becomes the best choice of all.

A dry canyon does not mean we won’t have fun or that it will be boring, far from it! The landscape of these dry canyons is incredibly beautiful and special, with walls well carved by water over millions and millions of years that transport us to very distant times.

It can also be a very interesting option if we want to start in the world of canyoning, to begin little by little, properly work on rappel technique, progression, knot and rope handling, anchor installation systems, etc., without having to consider the water factor and thus fully focus on other aspects. A very fun and playful option as well, truly!

These are the dry canyons most commonly done in the Sierra:

  • Barranco de Basender
  • Barranco de Portiacha
