HIKING TRAILS ON MOUNT JAIZKIBEL
Jaizkibel is the mountain that shelters the fishing village of Hondarribia under the watchful eye of the Higuer Lighthouse.
Located very close to the mouth of the Bidasoa River and the border with neighboring France, it is a key point due to its geographical location and therefore a place full of history scattered throughout its green pastures, dating back to duels and battles in the Middle Ages. More recently, during the Spanish Civil War, it was a strategic location for the Republican side, which built a series of fortifications on the summit and slopes of the mountain to defend the area. Today, some of these fortifications and remains from that historical chapter can be visited by following unique hiking routes.
Mount Jaizkibel rises nearly 550 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views of the coast and the Cantabrian Sea, as well as the French coastline and the Landes region, if atmospheric clarity permits.
This mountain is protected by the Natura 2000 Network (a European network of natural areas), which means it is a zone of great ecological value and high diversity of natural habitats, thus several areas must be protected for their flora and fauna. More specifically, Jaizkibel is included as a Special Conservation Area (ZEC), along with its neighboring mountain in the region, Aiako Harriak.
As a species to highlight in these parts, it is common to see griffon vultures soaring over the mountainous area (a species protected as “vulnerable” in the Basque Country), and less frequently, the Egyptian vulture (endangered).

HIKING ROUTE THROUGH THE VALLEY OF COLORS
Highly notable in Mount Jaizkibel is the Valley of Colors, in Labetxu. Erosion has created different geological formations with various shades of color, making the landscape very special. These geological formations are very interesting from a scientific perspective and also offer a significant attraction to this mountain.
Very close to this place we can also find the paramoudras, very peculiar geological formations characteristic of this area.
