Aiako Harriak is one of the nine Natural Parks in Euskadi, officially declared as such in 1995. This gives us an idea of the importance and richness of this place.
Located at the eastern end of Guipúzcoa, according to some experts, these three unique granite mountains in the Basque Country are considered the beginning of the Pyrenees and are among the oldest mountains in our surroundings.
This mountain also holds a great deal of history, where Iron Age archaeological remains have been found, and where the Romans used these mountains as mining sites, leaving behind the legacies of the Meazuri (Irún) and Arditurri (Oiartzun) mines.
These three granite rock masses offer a wide range of possibilities for hiking routes, whether along the ridge’s upper part—allowing a 360º panoramic view from over 800 meters above sea level—or along the trails passing through the lower slopes, either on the Guipuzcoan side (Northwest) or on the Navarrese side (Southeast).
This gives us a variety of options both in terms of landscapes and difficulty levels, allowing these routes to be adapted for all skill levels and for families, groups, or couples.

THE FAMOUS RING PASS
Many times you may have heard about the ring pass existing between the peaks of Aiako Harriak.

It may be the most demanding or technical pass we encounter when moving from the second peak to the third, or vice versa, during the route. It is a somewhat airy and vertical passage, but knowing where to place your hands and feet, you can overcome it without major difficulties, possibly using the famous ring to help you.
Aiako Harriak adds a significant element of challenge and risk to our day adventure, where at this pass and in other climbs and descents we must be very attentive. For this reason, it is always recommended to carefully plan and review the route before starting and, if necessary, hire a local guide who knows all the passages well and can assist you in these more technical sections, as well as safely guide the group while providing explanations on various topics throughout the journey.
