CANYONING: LA LEZE GORGE
An incredible combination of canyoning and speleology in the Basque Country
The La Leze canyon descent is one of the most special places we have in Euskadi Basque Country for canyoning or canyon descent. One of the magical treasures where we can combine canyoning with speleology!
Speleology?! But isn’t that the activity where you enter a pitch-dark cave and can’t see anything?: Yes, but no!
But what is the La Leze gorge like?
Without wanting to confuse you more… the La Leze gorge is a cavity about 80 meters high that crosses the Altzania mountain range from north to south. For many years, the Artzanegi river carved through the karst system of this area, eroding and polishing the limestone rock and forming this incredible cave. Thus, we can pass through this cave while canyoning, an experience that will leave us amazed!

Throughout the entire route, the cavity height is very high, so we won’t encounter any narrow passages that make us uncomfortable or claustrophobic; at all times, we will have freedom of movement without any tight or stressful moments.
Using a headlamp to light our way, we will navigate the elevation difference between the entrance and exit by walking through the water or swimming at times, where we will need to overcome some rappels, a couple of small (and optional) jumps, and a few slides to add extra fun to the activity.
Thanks to its characteristics, canyoning in La Leze is ideal for people who want to start canyoning in the Basque Country, as well as for those who have experience and want to enjoy a complete but accessible canyon.
This descent into the La Leze canyon, right in the heart of Euskadi and the Basque Country, offers one of the most unforgettable experiences in canyoning in the Basque Country. The combination of walking through water, overcoming rappels, and sliding down natural waterslides turns this canyoning trip into a unique visual adventure, where the light and shapes of the limestone rock carved by the Artzanegi River accompany us at every moment. Thanks to its enormous cavity and spectacular dimensions, La Leze is not only an exciting challenge for canyoning enthusiasts but also a natural spectacle worth experiencing and photographing from within.
Undoubtedly, one of the star activities of canyoning, here and not in the Pyrenees, right at home!
